The Cistern of the Plain - Valsami (in Mastoratika)

Cistern of the plain - Valsami (Mastoratika)

It was built by the British in the location of Mastoratika or Valsameika between 1859-1862. Above the two columns of the entrance, there is the inscription "Constructed by Royal Magnanimity 1862" in both English and Greek.

The need for water supply in the Mastoratika-Argyratika area compelled the British administration to plan and construct the Kampos cistern. Each family volunteered to bring sand, lime, and stones. However, to further increase the size of the cistern beyond the initial plans, nearly the entire population offered around 20 talers, as mentioned in two agreements (October 5 and 27, 1858) preserved in the Paxos Archives. The foundation stone was laid on June 22, 1859, by the land surveyor of his Excellency, Lane, the Prefect Aloisios Velianitis, etc., after a consecration performed by the Most Holy Lord Dionysios.
